Cricket Australia has unveiled the 2026-27 domestic fixtures, and there’s plenty for state cricket fans to get excited about.
While the season follows a familiar format, there are a few noticeable changes that show a greater emphasis on preparing Australia’s next Test players, while also giving fans more opportunities to watch Sheffield Shield cricket at the country’s biggest venues.
The domestic summer gets underway on 18 September with the Dean Jones Trophy One-Day Cup, before the Sheffield Shield season begins on 7 October. Defending champions South Australia will be looking to go back-to-back, while every state will be chasing a place in the Shield Final from 25-29 March.
One of the biggest wins for fans is the return of Sheffield Shield cricket to Australia’s premier Test grounds. Every state will host home matches at its major international venue throughout the season, highlighted by Perth Stadium hosting its first Sheffield Shield match in eight years.
It’s a move that gives players valuable experience in Test conditions while allowing supporters to enjoy first-class cricket on the biggest stage.
Another standout feature is the dedicated day-night Sheffield Shield round in early February. All three matches will be played with the pink ball under lights at the MCG, Adelaide Oval and the Gabba, providing ideal preparation for players ahead of the historic 150th Anniversary Test later in the month.
The schedule also includes several important lead-up fixtures for the international summer. A Cricket Australia XI will take on Bangladesh in a three-day match at Marrara Ground in Darwin from 6-8 August, while the Prime Minister’s XI will face England in a pink-ball three-day match at Junction Oval in March 2027.
The One-Day Cup has its own headline attraction, with Victoria hosting New South Wales under lights at Junction Oval on AFL Grand Final Eve. It’s one of the most unique fixtures on the domestic calendar and shapes as a great showcase for the competition.
Overall, the 2026-27 schedule strikes a strong balance between developing Australia’s next generation of international players and giving domestic cricket the spotlight it deserves.

There’s no better way to kick off a Sheffield Shield season than with the defending champions taking centre stage. South Australia begin their title defence against a Victorian side that will be eager to make an early statement after falling short of the Shield Final last summer.
With both teams expected to feature plenty of Australian representatives and emerging talent pushing for higher honours, this shapes as one of the highest-quality contests of the opening round. An early win can set the tone for the entire season, making this a clash with plenty more than just four points on the line.
2. Queensland v Victoria
31 October – The Gabba (Round 3)
Why it’s a must-watch:
This has all the ingredients to be one of the standout matches of the first half of the season. It’s Queensland’s first Sheffield Shield game at the Gabba for the summer, and they’ll be keen to make home advantage count against one of their biggest rivals.
These contests are usually played at a high standard, with plenty of Australian and Australia A talent on both sides. If both teams get off to good starts, this could already have a big influence on the race for a place in the Sheffield Shield Final.
3. Western Australia v Tasmania
23 November – Perth Stadium (Round 5)
Why it’s a must-watch:
This isn’t just another Shield match—it’s the long-awaited return of first-class cricket to Perth Stadium. After eight years away, one of Australia’s best cricket venues is finally back on the Sheffield Shield calendar, making this one of the season’s landmark fixtures.
Western Australia and Tasmania have both been among the competition’s strongest teams in recent years, so don’t expect either side to give an inch. Add in the chance to see Shield cricket back under the lights and atmosphere of Perth Stadium, and this is a game every domestic cricket fan should have circled.
4. New South Wales v Queensland
22 November – SCG / Cricket Central (Round 5)

Some rivalries never disappoint, and New South Wales against Queensland is right up there. These two states have produced countless Australian cricketers over the years, and there’s always a little extra on the line whenever they meet.
By Round 5, the Shield ladder will be starting to take shape, making this a genuine litmus test for two sides with finals ambitions. Whether it’s played at the SCG or Cricket Central, expect plenty of quality, plenty of fire and a contest that could prove pivotal in the race for the Sheffield Shield Final.
5. South Australia v New South Wales (Day-Night)
8 February – Adelaide Oval (Round 7)

If there’s one game that showcases everything great about pink-ball cricket, it’s this one. Adelaide Oval has become the home of day-night first-class cricket in Australia, making it the perfect stage for one of the biggest matches of the Shield season.
